With considerable experience in all aspects of high quality book production, Matt Watkins has published over 50 titles in the last eight years with artists including Richard Long, James Rosenquist, Keith Tyson and Damien Hirst, as well as several catalogues for important survey exhibitions. Working with a large number of independent designers, editors, photographers, repro specialists, printers, and distributors, these books have sought to combine a high level of design and production with rigorous editorial standards.

01 — Glasnost: Soviet Non-Conformist Art in the 1990s — 2010

 

 

Published to accompany a major historic exhibition of Soviet art from the post-Glasnost period, featuring essays by Olga Sliblova, Ekaterina Degot and Boris Groys. The book reproduces the work of over 50 artists and includes biographies and a glossary of terms. All texts are reproduced in English and Russian.

02 — Home Lands – Land Marks: Contemporary Art from South Africa — 2008

 

 

Curated by art historian Tamar Garb, Home Lands – Land Marks brought together seven contemporary artists working in South Africa, from established names like David Goldblatt and William Kentridge to newer figures such as Nicholas Hlobo. Includes essays by Tamar Garb and Okwui Enwezor and a short story by Ivan Vladislavic.

03 — Mythologies — 2009

 

 

Published alongside Haunch of Venison's major group exhibition Mythologies, this 'reader' combines essays, artist biographies and illustrations alongside an A to Z of related subjects, ideas, and cultural and historical figures. The essays are contributed by Ben Tufnell and James Putnam.

04 — Abstract Expressionism - A World Elsewhere — 2008

 

 

This major survey of Abstract Expressionism, curated by David Anfam, opened Haunch of Venison New York in 2008, bringing together works by 28 artists.

05 — Keith Tyson: Studio Wall Drawings 1997–2007 — 2007

 

 

Comprehensively cataloguing ten years of Keith Tyson's series of Studio Wall Drawings in a monumental 500-page book, with an essay by Simon Grant and interview with the artist by Beatrix Ruf. The reprographics and new photography were handled by Dawkins Colour in London.

06 — Damien Hirst & Michael Joo: Have You Ever Really Looked at the Sun? — 2010

 

 

Designed by Jason Beard, director of Other Criteria, Have You Ever Really Looked at the Sun? brings together the work of Damien Hirst and Michael Joo, as exhibited in Berlin in 2010. Featuring an essay by John Gray and an interview with both artists and Hans-Ulrich Obrist.

07 — James Rosenquist — 2006

 

 

Published for a major three-site James Rosenquist exhibition featuring a number of new 'billboard' paintings, the book included essays by Carter Ratcliff and Sarah Bancroft and an interview with Rosenquist by Scott Rothkopf. Reprographics by Dawkins Colour and printing by Lecturis, Eindhoven.
