Jamie Shovlin's Various Arrangements continued his Fontana Modern Masters project started seven years earlier. Creating a conceptual framework around the cover designs of Fontana's series of study guides from the 1970s and 80s, Shovlin created a new series of watercolours and paintings derived using a complex system of colour classification derived from data extracted from the contents of the original books.
The front cover features a specially shot image of the sides of the canvasses, revealing the layers of process in each painting. The endpapers reproduce colour swatches derived from formula constructed by Shovlin documented in the colour wheel 'key' at the heart of the series. The book is printed on three different papers to reproduce the series of watercolours, paintings and documentary photographs.
